Norvento nED 100 turbine at Hillmoor Field, Pembrokeshire.
Expert Planning and Development Support from Renewables First
Year: 2015
Location: Pembrokeshire
Technology: Norvento nED 100 turbine
Output: 100 kW
Role: Site Finding / Feasibility / Planning
This 100 kW wind turbine project in Pembrokeshire demonstrates Renewables First’s expertise in delivering the critical planning and development stages of commercial onshore wind projects. Our team was responsible for the critical pre-construction phases of the development, delivering comprehensive site finding, feasibility studies and planning services to ensure the project was ready for successful construction.
For this particular project, the turbine installation was carried out by the wind turbine manufacturer, Norvento, following the successful completion of the planning and development stages managed by Renewables First.
While our role on this project focused on pre-installation services, Renewables First supports commercial wind projects through every stage of development, from initial feasibility and planning to project management, installation and commissioning.
Although completed in 2015, this project continues to highlight the importance of expert planning, technical knowledge and experienced project delivery in achieving successful onshore wind developments across the UK.
Finding the Right Solution for the Site
The site was originally assessed for the installation of a 500 kW wind turbine. Following detailed feasibility studies and planning assessments, a 100 kW turbine project was identified as the most suitable solution with greatest chance of achieving planning consent.
The smaller turbine complemented an existing installation in a neighbouring field, helping to minimise visual impact while maintaining strong renewable energy generation potential.
By selecting the most appropriate turbine for the site, the project achieved an effective balance between energy output, planning considerations and environmental sensitivity.
Norvento nED 100 Turbine Specification
The installed turbine was a Norvento nED 100, a direct-drive, variable-speed wind turbine recognised for its reliability, efficiency and high-quality engineering.
Key specifications included:
- Rated output: 100 kW
- Hub height: 24.5 metres
- Blade tip height: 35.4 metres
- Rotor diameter: 22 metres
- Average hub height wind speed: 6.8 m/s
Based on the site’s wind conditions, the turbine was expected to generate approximately 350,000 kWh of renewable electricity each year, enough to supply the equivalent of around 95 average Welsh households.
Grid Connection and Site Infrastructure
The development transformed approximately 32 square metres of previously unused land into a productive renewable energy asset. Power generated by the turbine is exported to the National Grid via an underground cable running from the turbine to the site boundary before connecting to the nearest 11 kV overhead network through approximately 340 metres of overhead line.
The location also benefited from excellent access, requiring only 130 metres of new access track, helping to minimise construction work and reduce environmental impact.
A Smooth and Efficient Delivery
Following the successful planning application managed by Renewables First, the project progressed quickly through construction.
Planning permission was granted in July 2015, with commissioning completed just three and a half months later in November 2015. The efficient programme reflected the benefits of detailed project planning, close coordination and collaboration between Renewables First and the installation contractor.
