Generate Clean Energy with Solar Car Ports and Covered Parking
High-quality solar car ports and parking canopies designed for UK businesses, local authorities and public-sector sites. Transform your car park into a renewable energy generator that cuts energy costs, emissions, and grid dependence.
Why Choose Solar Car Ports?
Solar car ports (also called solar canopies or covered parking structures) combine renewable power generation with practical benefits. They provide shelter from rain and sun, improve site aesthetics, and turn underused parking areas into productive assets.
They’re ideal for:
- Business parks and distribution centres
- Local authorities and public-sector sites
- Universities, colleges, and hospitals
- Shopping centres, transport hubs, and leisure facilities
Key Benefits
- Dual-purpose use: Generate clean electricity while protecting vehicles.
- Maximise land use: Perfect when roof space is limited or unsuitable for PV.
- Visible sustainability: Highly visible statement of environmental leadership.
- EV charging integration: Combine PV with chargers for low-carbon mobility.
- Scalable and flexible: Easily expanded or combined with battery storage.
- Long-term value: 25–30-year lifespan, minimal maintenance, strong ROI.

Typical System Sizes & Outcomes
- Capacity: From 50 kW (small business car park) up to 2 MW+ (multi-bay installations).
- Structure type: Single or double-span steel frames (often called r-port, T-port and Y-port).
- Panel type: High-efficiency (typically 24%) monocrystalline modules (500–600 W+).
- Energy yield: Typically 850–1,150 kWh/kWp/year, depending on location and orientation.
- Payback: 5–9 years for self-consumption systems.
Design & Engineering
Our engineering-led approach ensures each car port is tailored to your site:
- Structural design for wind, snow, and load compliance (Eurocode/BS).
- Electrical layout integrated with on-site distribution or EV charging.
- Drainage and access planning for safe, unobstructed vehicle flow.
- Optional lighting, signage, or branding integration.
All systems are designed to be fully compliant with BS 7671, G99/G100 grid connection, and Building Regulations.
Planning Permission & Permitted Development
Since December 2023, solar canopies for non-domestic car parks are covered under new Permitted Development Rights (Class OA) in England, provided that:
- The structure is no higher than 4 m (most systems meet this requirement)
- It’s at least 10 m from the highway, and
- It’s not located in a protected area (AONB, Conservation Area, etc.).
Under Class OA, prior approval may still be required in sensitive areas (e.g. conservation zones or Article 2(3) land). We confirm this as part of our planning appraisal.
In Scotland, similar rights apply under the 2024 PDR updates. In Wales, there is no dedicated car port class, so most projects still require local planning approval.
Where full planning is required, Renewables First handles all aspects – from design drawings, Landscape and Visual Impact (LVIA assessments), glint/glare assessments to planning submissions and management.
Construction & Installation
We offer a full turnkey service, including:
- Foundation / drainage / electrical distribution and connection design
- Structural steel erection and PV module installation
- EV charger integration and electrical commissioning
- Principal Designer and Principal Contractor roles under CDM Regulations
All projects are managed to minimise disruption to live sites and maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle access.
Operation & Maintenance
Each system includes long-term monitoring and support options:
- Remote performance monitoring
- Routine inspections and cleaning
- Structural and electrical safety checks
- O&M packages tailored to client requirements

Frequently Asked Questions
Do solar car ports need planning permission?
Often not – many are now classed as permitted development under Class OA, subject to site conditions.
Can car ports include EV chargers?
Yes – can be integrated with fast and rapid chargers, complete with load balancing and OCPP-compliant control.
Can the structures be retrofitted to existing car parks?
Yes. We design custom mounting and foundation systems suitable for existing tarmac or concrete bases.
Are they suitable for public or staff car parks?
Yes. Systems can be designed for both, with safety lighting, signage, and cable management

If you have a lot of land, you will have a lot of renewable energy generation potential, often utilising different technologies. We can assess your land and building assets to identify the sites with the highest potential, then provide all of the services you need to get the sites fully assessed, designed, consented and built. For some clients we operate the finished system for them so they have minimal disruption and just get the financial benefit produced. In some cases we can link ‘investors looking for sites’ with ‘landowners looking for investment’.
We work with a lot of businesses that want to a) reduce their energy bills and b) significantly reduce their carbon emissions. This is our core business. We can do everything from detailed feasibility studies, through the design and consenting stages and then build your system. We understand that any disruption to your day-to-day operations during the construction stage must be minimised and are very familiar with designing systems that are compliant with the needs of commercial insurance companies. As the client, you can be as involved, or not involved, as you want to be - either way we will appoint a Project Engineer to be your knowledgeable first point of contact and keep you informed throughout the process. Our expertise will deliver you an optimised renewable energy generation system that will reduce energy costs and carbon emissions and look great on your marketing material.
We’ve done many projects with utility companies. We are adept at high-level portfolio and site assessments to identify potential projects, all of the way to detailed design, consenting and construction. We are familiar with your critical day-to-day operational functions which must not be compromised, your strict adherence to the highest standards of Health & Safety and rigorous approval processes that must be followed at all project stages.
We support co-operatives and local groups with the technical engineering and project delivery of community-scale renewable projects. Community groups can generally access a lot of grants, particularly to find the feasibility and consenting stages – we are always abreast of what is available and happy to discuss how to access these grants. We can also point groups towards template group structures that are available to use, and introduce new groups to community groups that have been through the process and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
We work with local authorities for the operation and maintenance of existing renewable energy systems, design and build new systems and undertake consultancy work on whole-area renewable energy resource assessments, which often form the basis of local development plans. Many local authorities have ambitious carbon reduction targets to meet, so our expertise in actually designing and building systems makes us a reassuring partner in any project.
We’ve worked with private individuals, family offices and investment funds to deliver technically robust, long-term renewable generation projects. Our focus is on dependable engineering delivery and attractive project ROI.
We work with high-demand residential properties where there is space for larger renewable systems. We can offer conventional grid connected systems, fully off-grid capable systems in case electricity supplies fail in the future and energy (battery) storage systems. Systems can be designed to be discreet, and we will respect your privacy.
We help schools, colleges, and universities deploy on-site renewables for cost savings, resilience, and climate education. Educational institutions often have complex consumption data, but we are adept at analysing this to understand when you need generation. We can assess your building and land portfolio for its renewable energy potential and recommend the best options, then design and deliver it. Operational Health & Safety are always key considerations in educational settings and we can recommend appropriate mitigations.
Our building and land portfolio assessment services are key for identifying the best renewable energy generation opportunities, then we can design and deliver systems that are sympathetic to the particular building’s aesthetic or land’s ecological sensitivities.
