Windpower Engineering Expertise
for Your Onshore Wind Project
At Renewables First, we are experienced wind energy consultants, specialising in the feasibility assessment, consenting, system design, procurement, construction and project delivery of onshore wind turbines. Our projects range from single turbines and wind clusters through to wind farms.
Most of our projects use multi-megawatt wind turbines, but we also use 1 MW and 100 kW ‘medium-wind’ turbines for smaller projects. We have particular expertise with integrating wind turbines into manufacturing and commercial sites where the electricity can be consumed on-site, but also work with greenfield sites where 100% of the electricity is exported to the grid.
Our key strength is that we not only design and build projects – we can also operate them. This hands-on experience means our feasibility, consenting and design work is grounded in practical, real-world delivery.
Abundant Cheap Electricity
Why Windpower?
Onshore wind is one of the most cost-effective and proven renewable technologies in the UK, which benefits from world-class wind resources. Working with a specialist wind energy consultant allows organisations to unlock the full commercial and environmental value of wind generation.
Onshore wind enables organisations to:
- Significantly reduce electricity costs through on-site consumption, or create a new revenue stream by exporting to the grid
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Strengthen energy independence
- Demonstrate visible, measurable progress toward net-zero goals
- Scale projects from single turbines to multi-megawatt clusters and wind farms
- Benefit from long-term, predictable returns with asset lifespans of 20–25 years
Renewables First supports clients throughout every stage of the project lifecycle, ensuring developments are technically robust, commercially viable and practically deliverable.
Our Windpower Services
Onshore wind projects involve hundreds of variables, and no site is perfect. As an experienced wind energy consultant, Renewables First assesses all critical factors early in the process. Our wind feasibility work includes:
- Wind Resource Estimate: We use digitally modelled wind data to estimate mean wind speed at hub height and wind rose data.
- Planning Risk Review: Our team identifies likely planning constraints and assesses the probability of securing consent.
- Site Access Assessment: We check physical accessibility for wind turbine delivery from the nearest major A-road to the site.
- Grid capacity Assessment: We use published DNO data to assess capacity of export to the grid.
- Financial Performance Modelling: We model wind turbine performance at the site and what this means in terms of revenue generated.
For viable sites, we identify high-risk issues before full planning begins, helping clients de-risk projects and avoid unnecessary costs later in the process.
Wind power planning requires a complex combination of planning documentation and specialist reports, including:
- Noise assessments
- Ecology studies
- Visual impact assessments
- Heritage considerations
- Transport assessments
Renewables First defines the optimal scope of supporting information to strengthen planning applications while managing project costs effectively.
Once applications are submitted, we lead engagement with planning authorities, helping resolve technical queries and progress projects efficiently. We also negotiate with DNOs to secure the most commercially advantageous grid connection offers.
Delivering a successful wind project requires multi-disciplinary engineering expertise. Our installation and project delivery services include:
- Site layout and structural design
- Electrical design
- Procurement management
- Contractor coordination
- Planning condition compliance
- Project management
Renewables First combines engineering knowledge with hands-on delivery experience. This allows us to produce practical, buildable solutions that perform effectively in operation.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a wind energy consultant do?
A wind energy consultant helps assess, design, plan and deliver onshore wind projects. This includes feasibility studies, wind resource analysis, planning support, grid connection applications, engineering design, procurement and operational support. Renewables First provides end-to-end consultancy and project delivery services for commercial and agricultural wind developments.
How do I know if my site is suitable for a wind turbine?
Several factors determine whether a site is viable for onshore wind development, including wind speeds, planning constraints, grid availability, access and nearby properties. Renewables First carries out detailed feasibility assessments to identify opportunities and potential risks before projects progress further.
How much electricity can an onshore wind turbine generate?
The amount of electricity generated depends on the turbine size, local wind resource and site conditions. Smaller commercial turbines may generate enough electricity for farms or industrial sites, while larger multi-megawatt turbines can supply significant amounts of power for export to the grid.
Can wind turbines reduce business electricity costs?
Yes. On-site wind generation can significantly reduce imported electricity costs by supplying renewable energy directly to a business or industrial facility. Many clients also generate additional income through exporting surplus electricity to the grid.
Does Renewables First manage planning applications for wind turbines?
Yes. Renewables First manages the full planning and consenting process for onshore wind developments, including specialist surveys, planning documentation, stakeholder engagement and communication with planning authorities and DNOs. Our team works to maximise the likelihood of securing consent while managing project costs effectively.

If you have a lot of land, you will have a lot of renewable energy generation potential, often utilising different technologies. We can assess your land and building assets to identify the sites with the highest potential, then provide all of the services you need to get the sites fully assessed, designed, consented and built. For some clients we operate the finished system for them so they have minimal disruption and just get the financial benefit produced. In some cases we can link ‘investors looking for sites’ with ‘landowners looking for investment’.
We work with a lot of businesses that want to a) reduce their energy bills and b) significantly reduce their carbon emissions. This is our core business. We can do everything from detailed feasibility studies, through the design and consenting stages and then build your system. We understand that any disruption to your day-to-day operations during the construction stage must be minimised and are very familiar with designing systems that are compliant with the needs of commercial insurance companies. As the client, you can be as involved, or not involved, as you want to be - either way we will appoint a Project Engineer to be your knowledgeable first point of contact and keep you informed throughout the process. Our expertise will deliver you an optimised renewable energy generation system that will reduce energy costs and carbon emissions and look great on your marketing material.
We’ve done many projects with utility companies. We are adept at high-level portfolio and site assessments to identify potential projects, all of the way to detailed design, consenting and construction. We are familiar with your critical day-to-day operational functions which must not be compromised, your strict adherence to the highest standards of Health & Safety and rigorous approval processes that must be followed at all project stages.
We support co-operatives and local groups with the technical engineering and project delivery of community-scale renewable projects. Community groups can generally access a lot of grants, particularly to find the feasibility and consenting stages – we are always abreast of what is available and happy to discuss how to access these grants. We can also point groups towards template group structures that are available to use, and introduce new groups to community groups that have been through the process and have a wealth of knowledge and experience to share.
We work with local authorities for the operation and maintenance of existing renewable energy systems, design and build new systems and undertake consultancy work on whole-area renewable energy resource assessments, which often form the basis of local development plans. Many local authorities have ambitious carbon reduction targets to meet, so our expertise in actually designing and building systems makes us a reassuring partner in any project.
We’ve worked with private individuals, family offices and investment funds to deliver technically robust, long-term renewable generation projects. Our focus is on dependable engineering delivery and attractive project ROI.
We work with high-demand residential properties where there is space for larger renewable systems. We can offer conventional grid connected systems, fully off-grid capable systems in case electricity supplies fail in the future and energy (battery) storage systems. Systems can be designed to be discreet, and we will respect your privacy.
We help schools, colleges, and universities deploy on-site renewables for cost savings, resilience, and climate education. Educational institutions often have complex consumption data, but we are adept at analysing this to understand when you need generation. We can assess your building and land portfolio for its renewable energy potential and recommend the best options, then design and deliver it. Operational Health & Safety are always key considerations in educational settings and we can recommend appropriate mitigations.
Our building and land portfolio assessment services are key for identifying the best renewable energy generation opportunities, then we can design and deliver systems that are sympathetic to the particular building’s aesthetic or land’s ecological sensitivities.
