Building onshore wind sites – what’s involved?

We typically manage the construction phase in three stages:

Stage 1 – Project Review & Outline Plan (≈1 month)

  • Review all project documentation (planning portal, grid offer, turbine procurement details, contractor agreements, etc.)
  • Identify outstanding requirements and integrate them into a clear project specification
  • Review planning consent conditions and prepare a plan to discharge them
  • Produce an initial project plan
  • Take on the CDM Principal Designer role and produce the initial Designer’s Risk Assessment

Benefit to you: Risks are identified early, giving you a clear roadmap and confidence to move forward.

Note: If Renewables First carried out the feasibility and consenting stages, this review will be relatively brief. If not, it will be more in-depth to ensure nothing is missed.

Stage 2 – Design, Specification & Procurement (≈4 months)

  • Produce a detailed site layout design, aligned with the planning consent
  • Complete onsite electrical (LV / 11 kV / 33 kV) and earthing system designs, plus lightning protection specification
  • Specify and procure ground investigations and complete civils works designs (wind turbine foundations, substation bases, trenching, access roads, crane pads, etc.)
  • Manage tendering and procurement for civil, electrical, and DNO works
  • Procure the wind turbine and other hardware
  • Ongoing discharging of planning conditions, including Biodiversity Net Gain works
  • Update the project plan and risk assessments as required
  • CDM coordination

Benefit to you: Every detail is planned and procured in advance, ensuring smooth delivery and cost control.

Stage 3 – Construction, Installation & Commissioning (≈5 months)

  • Oversee and manage all subcontractors and site works
  • Deliver civils works (foundations, substation, trenching, access roads, crane pads)
  • Manage installation of electrical systems (LV and HV, including client-owned 11 kV electrics)
  • Coordinate with turbine supplier and the DNO for timely installation
  • Commission the grid connection (G99 / G100 compliance)
  • Finalise discharging of planning conditions and Biodiversity Net Gain works
  • Resolve technical issues as they arise and maintain overall project management
  • CDM coordination

Benefit to you: We take responsibility for every aspect of construction and commissioning, ensuring your turbines are installed safely, efficiently, and are ready to generate.
