The Shenfield hydro 60 kW Archimedes screw turbine and fish pass is now complete and fully operational. Finishing touches, such as landscaping and planting around the hydro scheme is also complete.
The specification of the plant includes an IE4 super premium efficiency synchronous generator, and variable speed drive, allowing the plant to make use of even low summer flows effectively.
The control system of the hydro scheme also controls other sluices on site in order to moderate water levels and to automate the control of water flow in flood situations through the river, canal and mill complex.
Therefore the entire hydropower system, as well as being economically viable, also improves the connectivity of the river, reduces flood risk and generates low-carbon electricity. The scheme clearly demonstrates how historic sites and ageing infrastructure can be redeveloped and enhanced in a productive and sustainable manner.
Are you considering a hydropower project in the UK, Ireland or overseas?
The first step to develop any small or micro hydropower site is to conduct a full feasibility study.
