Why Choose Solar Car Ports?

Solar car ports (also called solar canopies or covered parking structures) combine renewable power generation with practical benefits. They provide shelter from rain and sun, improve site aesthetics, and turn underused parking areas into productive assets.

They’re ideal for:

  • Business parks and distribution centres
  • Local authorities and public-sector sites
  • Universities, colleges, and hospitals
  • Shopping centres, transport hubs, and leisure facilities

Key Benefits

  • Dual-purpose use: Generate clean electricity while protecting vehicles.
  • Maximise land use: Perfect when roof space is limited or unsuitable for PV.
  • Visible sustainability: Highly visible statement of environmental leadership.
  • EV charging integration: Combine PV with chargers for low-carbon mobility.
  • Scalable and flexible: Easily expanded or combined with battery storage.
  • Long-term value: 25–30-year lifespan, minimal maintenance, strong ROI.

Typical System Sizes & Outcomes

  • Capacity: From 50 kW (small business car park) up to 2 MW+ (multi-bay installations).
  • Structure type: Single or double-span steel frames (often called r-port, T-port and Y-port).
  • Panel type: High-efficiency (typically 24%) monocrystalline modules (500–600 W+).
  • Energy yield: Typically 850–1,150 kWh/kWp/year, depending on location and orientation.
  • Payback: 5–9 years for self-consumption systems.

Design & Engineering

Our engineering-led approach ensures each car port is tailored to your site:

  • Structural design for wind, snow, and load compliance (Eurocode/BS).
  • Electrical layout integrated with on-site distribution or EV charging.
  • Drainage and access planning for safe, unobstructed vehicle flow.
  • Optional lighting, signage, or branding integration.

All systems are designed to be fully compliant with BS 7671, G99/G100 grid connection, and Building Regulations.

Planning Permission & Permitted Development

Since December 2023, solar canopies for non-domestic car parks are covered under new Permitted Development Rights (Class OA) in England, provided that:

  • The structure is no higher than 4 m (most systems meet this requirement)
  • It’s at least 10 m from the highway, and
  • It’s not located in a protected area (AONB, Conservation Area, etc.).

Under Class OA, prior approval may still be required in sensitive areas (e.g. conservation zones or Article 2(3) land). We confirm this as part of our planning appraisal.

In Scotland, similar rights apply under the 2024 PDR updates. In Wales, there is no dedicated car port class, so most projects still require local planning approval.

Where full planning is required, Renewables First handles all aspects – from design drawings, Landscape and Visual Impact (LVIA assessments), glint/glare assessments to planning submissions and management.

Construction & Installation

We offer a full turnkey service, including:

  • Foundation / drainage / electrical distribution and connection design
  • Structural steel erection and PV module installation
  • EV charger integration and electrical commissioning
  • Principal Designer and Principal Contractor roles under CDM Regulations

All projects are managed to minimise disruption to live sites and maintain safe pedestrian and vehicle access.

Operation & Maintenance

Each system includes long-term monitoring and support options:

  • Remote performance monitoring
  • Routine inspections and cleaning
  • Structural and electrical safety checks
  • O&M packages tailored to client requirements

Just to answer some common questions...

Frequently Asked Questions

Do solar car ports need planning permission?

Often not – many are now classed as permitted development under Class OA, subject to site conditions.

Can car ports include EV chargers?

Yes – can be integrated with fast and rapid chargers, complete with load balancing and OCPP-compliant control.

Can the structures be retrofitted to existing car parks?

Yes. We design custom mounting and foundation systems suitable for existing tarmac or concrete bases.

Are they suitable for public or staff car parks?

Yes. Systems can be designed for both, with safety lighting, signage, and cable management
